Questions

Is the check really free?

Yes. You see your deadlines and options for free. You only pay $29 for a ready-to-send letter ($19 for a lower monthly rate).

Do you need my Social Security number?

No. The check never asks for it. The letter shows only the last 4 digits; you write the full number on the official form yourself.

How long do I have?

Social Security waits at least 30 days after the notice before collecting. A waiver or appeal sent within 30 days stops collection until it decides. You have 60 days to ask for reconsideration.

How much can they withhold?

If you do nothing, 50% of your monthly retirement, disability or survivor benefit, or 10% of your SSI payment.

Is this legal advice?

No. OverpayCheck is information from the official rules to help you send the right request.
